The dreamy shimmer of these turquoise waters seem almost unrealistic and somewhat out of place here on the Caribbean coast. This small, secluded township is located by the well-known Lake Bacalar, whose brilliant shades of blue and turquoise have earned it the nickname “Lagoon of Seven Colours“.
Laguna de Bacalar
Laguna de Bacalar is a long and narrow lake in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is approximately 42 km long measured from north to south, and less than 2 km at its widest. The lake is renowned for its striking blue color and water clarity, partly the result of having a white limestone bottom. Like most bodies of water in the Yucatán peninsula, the lake is fed by underground rivers, whose regular open pools are cenotes.
Sail Tour of the Lagoon
Be sure to take only a sail boat when visiting, the lagoon is a very delicate environment and motor boat are contributing to its destruction. Let’s be mindful visitors and let’s preserve this magnificent place intact!
